    • Now that technology and increased opportunities for travel bring us into closer contact with other cultures and nations, some of the awe and wonder formerly associated with World’s Fairs might have diminished. The fascination with fairs of old—the architecture, the innovations, the underlying international tensions—doesn’t seem to fade, however. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Brussels World’s Fair, which was the first fair of the postwar era. Think cold war, Space Age, Jetsons meets June Cleaver and you get the picture. Books and films about World Fairs abound, so check the library catalog and set your sights for a trip to the Fair.
    • Best-selling author David Baldacci charts a new course in his latest thriller. Instead of focusing on American political intrigues, The Whole Truth takes readers around the world as Baldacci’s characters uncover a plot to start World War III. Since he always researches his novels himself, Baldacci traveled to many of the locations mentioned in the novel before writing The Whole Truth, including Amsterdam, Dublin and Paris.
In this frightening and convincing view of a geopolitical crisis, the head of the world’s largest defense contractor hires a “perception management” company to re-ignite Cold War fears about the Red Menace. The plot calls to mind recent concerns about real-life Russian President Vladimir Putin. Intrigued? Check out
The Whole Truth, or pick up another Baldacci blockbuster here at the library.
    • Climbing season on Mount Everest is from April to June, with peak season in late May. This year, along with the usual attempted “firsts” and other superlatives—oldest, all-female, sans oxygen and Sherpas—one of this year’s teams will retrace the route of the late Sir Edmund Hillary, who in 1953, with climbing partner Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, became the first man to reach the summit. Other teams aiming for the top will include one featuring legendary British climber Ranulph Fiennes, and a Chinese team bearing the Olympic torch. For armchair adventurers, there are accounts of expeditions gone awry (Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air, for example), along with numerous biographies and memoirs.
