YOUTH SERVICES LIBRARIAN
Supervised By: Library Director
Supervises: Functions as a leader for youth
services
Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Library Director,
oversees and directs all activities associated with the teen and
childrens sections of the library. Plans and implements
related programs and selects and recommends appropriate reading
materials. Assists in all other aspects of library operations as
directed.
Essential Job Functions:
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or
all of the following essential functions. These examples do not

perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be
able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
- Manages and supervises activities and operations of the
Childrens Room of the library, and of the teen
section. Selects and acquires all materials for youth
from birth to age 18, and plans and implements exhibits,
activities and programs.
- Oversees and directs the efforts of volunteers and others
involved in youth services programming.
- Assists library patrons with questions and searches.
Performs circulation duties as needed.
- Administers a story time program. Selects books, songs
and visual aids and prepares corresponding craft projects.
Plans and administers summer reading programs and teen
programs.
- Selects and maintains well-rounded collection of
materials for children and teens including books, audio
books, and movies.
- Assists with public relations activities, records
maintenance and the preparation of various reports.
Maintains attendance statistics.
- Provides reader advisory services to children and parents
through personal contacts, bibliographies, booklists and
displays.
- Develops and creates displays for library showcases to
promote library and community activities.
- Performs community outreach to schools, community groups
and the public. Conducts tours of library facilities and
visits public schools. Makes presentations as necessary.
- Keeps abreast of modern developments in library science,
new administrative techniques and childrens
materials through research, continued education and
professional growth. Attends conferences, workshops, and
seminars as appropriate.
- Performs related work as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum
Qualifications:
The requirements listed below are representative of the
knowledge, skills, abilities and minimum qualifications necessary

Requirements include the following:
- A Masters Degree in library science.
- Some experience in youth services programming, working
with either young children or teens.
- Basic knowledge of the principles, practices and
procedures of professional library administration
including personnel administration, budgeting, grants
administration, and program planning.
- Thorough knowledge of childrens literature, library
collection and selection techniques.
- Knowledge of public relations techniques and events
planning.
- Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships and
use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when
dealing with employees, professional contacts, other
administrators, board members, and the public.
- Ability to use basic office equipment, audio-visual
equipment, and various computer software programs,
including word processing, spreadsheet, database, and
Internet.
- Ability to instruct patrons on proper use of library
equipment
- Ability to effectively communicate ideas and concepts
orally and in writing, and make presentations in the
public forum.
- Ability to work a varied schedule including nights and
weekends.
- Ability to critically assess situations, problem-solve,
and work effectively under stress, within deadlines and
changes in work priorities

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is
regularly required to communicate with others in person and on
the telephone. The employee is frequently required to review and
produce written and computerized documents. The employee is
frequently required to access and retrieve books, periodicals and
other materials that vary in weight, size and shape and may be
located at heights ranging from floor level to over-head level.
The employee is frequently required to access various locations
within the Library and attend meetings in locations away from the
building. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items of
light to moderate weight.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee
regularly works in an office setting within a public library. The
noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
Salary: Starting at $12.55
hourly
